This week, I was tasked with analyzing an Allstate commercial. This sounded silly to me at first, but then I realized how much the ads use rhetoric and how they are a great example to start an analysis on. I had chosen the Tailgate Grill ad, which can be watched here.
The author of this ad wanted the audience to experience the game day excitement and dread that would occur after it. Since the grill in the car leads to the car catching on fire, it shows the risks that can happen during a big game day. By stating the product, (insurance), at the end of the advertisement, the author obviously wants to promote safe and wise decisions. The target audience is adults who are looking for a safe and reliable insurance plan.
The context of this ad is a football game. This is to hopefully get the audience to relate to the ad, almost to say "what if that happened to me?" You can see how American culture greatly influences the advertisement too. Since football is widely seen as being a very American pastime, it important for the ad to relate to that so that an American audience is entertained. The advertisement also includes humor, which keeps the audience engaged and results in conversations about the ad.
The advertisement also follows the "slippery slope" format. This is evident by having events take place right after eachother, progressively getting worse and worse as time passes. The ad is chaotic and entertaining, which shows why the ads are very popular. Overall, the advertisement gets the job done and entices it's audience.
Hi Sarah! I agree with what you said and really like how you kept your entry very concise and to the point. I also like how you brought up the correlation about Allstate being an American brand.
